The Thing Walking Courses Erkundungsgänge in der Stadt

Walking courses

Explore Frankfurt by walking.

Here are three examples of walking courses.

Euro City Walk

A walking course organised by Frankfurter Kunstverein visiting selected "places" and "non-places" within the city center of Frankfurt, 4/23/2002

The course of the Kunstverein

The area: the city center, old town, main shopping district.

  Kunstverein

Gathering at the Kunstverein, which considers itself as a "place".

Kunstverein

Introduction by director Nicolaus Schafhausen.

Römer Römer

The Römer. Feeling like a tourist in the own city.
Fake architecture all around.

Maybe a "non-place" thinks tour guide Mrs. Müller.

Burger King Burger King

One of the inevitable yet undeclared city centers.

We don't have to eat inside.

  Esprit shop Zeil

Mrs. Müller explains the concept of the "Esprit
Flagship Store". Esprit is an american company.

On the Zeil, the main shopping road of Frankfurt.

On top of the Zeil gallery On top of the Zeil gallery

On top of the Zeil gallery, a shopping mall, with a view on selected investment options.

Really on top of everything.

Hauptwache B-Ebene Euro-Sign by Euro-Artist

Eleven floors beneath the Zeil gallery, the B-Ebene, a traffic passage serving various underground lines dating back to the 60s.

Mr. Schafhausen explains the concept of the Euro-Sign by Ottmar Hörl in front of the European Central Bank. Hörl has been christened a "non-artist" by the participants in the meantime.

Conclusion

The Frankfurter Kunstverein is actually an American company from San Diego, California. It has recently established its brand new flagship store right in the center of the town, opposite the Schirn (a "non-place"). 24,000sqm exhibition space are reserved for "just everything" including "non-art". The company's strategy aims at central and eastern Europe trying to dominate local art markets in the low-price sector. By 2010 twelve hundred curators will work for the Frankfurter Kunstverein serving about 301,025 visitors a month.
